Welcome to the office of Dr. Peter Alan Rao
This is a traditional, solo practice in psychiatry. The purpose of this practice is to provide outstanding psychiatric care based on the most recent advances in the field, including advances in psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, genetics and neuroscience.
Introduction and Philosophy of the Practice
The healthcare field has been undergoing enormous changes over the past 25 years. My intention is to maintain a setting in which I can work with patients under optimal circumstances. This means giving myself enough time to listen to people, ask important questions and formulate treatments plans that specifically are designed for that patient.
- Treatment of Opiate Addiction with Buprenorphine
Buprenorphine (brand names Suboxone Film, Zubsolv, and Bunavail) is approved by the DEA for the treatment of opiate dependence in an office-based setting. Dr. Rao is one of the few in the Tulsa area who have a special license to prescribe buprenorphine for this purpose. Over 90% of our patients remain opiate-free while taking buprenorphine.
- Treatment of Chronic Pain with Buprenorphine
Buprenorphine is used as an alternative to traditional opiate painkillers when the patient has developed tolerance to their pain-relieving properties – when the pain medicine “has stopped working”. The addiction to pain medicine can be broken by switching to buprenorphine, which does not cause euphoria and does not lead to tolerance.
- Treatment of Depression
Dr. Rao has over 20 years of experience treating major depressive disorder, including patients with chronic, persistent depression which has not responded to either psychotherapy and/or medication. He has expertise in treating these patients with new antidepressant combinations, genetic testing and TMS, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Our success rate with TMS is over 90%.
- Treatment of Anxiety Disorders
Dr. Rao has over 20 years of experience treating the full range of anxiety problems, including chronic worry, panic, phobias, PTSD, OCD, and social fears (social phobia).
Dr. Rao is a trained psychotherapist and sees patients for brief, short-term and long-term therapy.
